National Public Radio recently did a report on the increase of homebirth in the United States. In 2006, more than 38,000 babies were born out of the hospital, either at home or in a birth center. That is about 1% of total births in the United States. Of all the births occurring outside of the hospital, 83% were planned to deliver out of the hospital.
